It was the first year that Reese was old enough to join Ella and Jeff for the Indian Princess/Adventure Guide camping getaway. So, I got Austin to myself all weekend!
We started the weekend off with dinner on Friday at Chris Madrids. He was a little surprised at how old the building was and couldn’t understand how people would call Jeff’s house when he was a boy, asking for the wrong Chris Madrids
He has no concept of life with a phone book and lack of smart phones. It was really cool for me to have dinner and talk alone with Austin and hear his perspective on school and life, from the mind of a 10.5 year old boy. We were talking about his new school and how he was surprised that one of his friends was very quiet in class. I asked him why he thought that was and he told me “some people adapt easier than others.” I asked him where he thought he fell and he told me he is in the easier to adapt category…It was such a cool moment to have such an insightful conversation with this boy who not too long ago (in my mind) was just a baby. (Don’t worry, we were back to fart jokes within a moment)
The next day the family and I headed out to cheer on Austin at his flag football game where he ended up scoring 3 touchdowns!
We wrapped it up taking Austin and two of his oldest friends to see Goosebumps…by themselves. A friend and I let them watch this movie and we watched another movie a few theaters down. It was the first time and was declared by the boys to be “a big step!” They were thrilled, we checked on them a few times, and all was well. No one got kicked out and everyone had fun.
Austin didn’t want to sleep upstairs alone, so he slept with me both nights….I know the girls had a great time with Jeff, but this will be a weekend I will always cherish too. Time is moving way too fast, so I love that we had a few days to just enjoy each other!
